Converting a Text File to a DAISY Talking Book:

This process takes 2 parts to complete:

  1. Convert a text file into a DTBxml file by using the MS Word Save as DAISY plug in. Here is the link to download the plug in:

http://www.daisy.org/projects/save-as-daisy-microsoft/

  1. Use DAISY Pipeline Narrator to convert the DTBxml file to a DAISY Talking Book 2.02 or DAISY 3 file that is an Mp3/wav encoded format that will play on an Mp3 player or on a DAISY player.

Here is the link on Sourceforge to download the free Pipeline software.

Both steps are simple to do and you don't really need to know all the format names and what they mean to do it. Below is the simple steps (assuming you have downloaded the save as DAISY plug in for MS Word and the DAISY Pipeline program).

STEP ONE: Converting T ext in a Word 07 Document

  1. Save text first as a word document and name it.

  2. Select "Save as DAISY" and it will open a window to name the file and the destination. (I save on the desktop so it's easy to find.)

  3. When saved, you will see it as a white page icon with a globe (It is an Internet readable file now - xml)

That's all to step one!

STEP TWO: Converting the DAISY Word 2007/xml file as a full DTB in Pipeline.

  1. Open Pipeline

  2. Select "File" at the top left and choose "New job".

  3. In the next window, choose "creation" click on the plus sign (we are going to create here!)

  4. Under "Creation"- after you open the choices with the plus sign- select "simple".

  5. Select "Narrator".

  6. Press the "Next" button.

  7. A new window will open asking you to browse for the file you want to convert. Browse to the desktop (or wherever you saved your converted

    2

text) and select it. Then set your destination spot where it will be saved - I choose the desktop.

  8. Press the "Finish" button. That's pretty much it - now the computer does the rest of the work.

  9. Up at the top of the screen on the left you will see a green play button and a red stop button. Press the green play button to start the conversion process. Depending on the size of your file, this might take a while.

There will be many green bars that fill up as the different pieces of encoding are completed. When done, the script will say that the job is finished.

Your converted file will be saved where you told it and is ready to play!

You will see 3 folders:

  1. DAISY 202 plays on older players,

  2. A folder with Mp3 that will play in Mp3 players,

  3. A third folder with numbers only - will be the wav files.

The sound files in these folders should open and read in a DAISY player. You can play the wav or mp3 files in Windows media player or Quicktime player/iTunes. Just double-click on an Mp3 file on your computer and it should automatically open a player on your computer and start reading.

Good Luck!
